Toronto - Special litter bags and gloves for the fifth annual 20-Minute Toronto Makeover are now available at participating Toronto/GTA Pizza Pizza retail outlets and Toronto’s Recreation Community Centres. Get equipped and join students, seniors, business professionals and government officials and staff in the city-wide 20-minute clean-up taking place on Friday, April 18 at 2 p.m.

“The 20-Minute Makeover engages students and businesses who volunteer just 20 minutes of their time to make a world of difference. I think we all agree that Toronto is worth no less,” said Mayor David Miller.

The 20-Minute Makeover stretches across the GTA, with the participation of Oakville, Mississauga, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Pickering and Ajax. In 2007, Toronto, along with these GTA communities, attracted more than 200,000 registered participants.

The seven organizations returning as sponsors for the 2008 makeover include: TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, The Home Depot, Tim Hortons, Toronto Star, Pizza Pizza, The Toronto Sun and McDonald’s.

The Friday makeover is followed on Saturday, April 19 by Mayor David Miller’s Community Clean-up Day, an annual event offering an opportunity to clean up a park or other public space in Toronto neighbourhoods.

Organizations and large groups must register by April 11 for either event by going online at http://www.toronto.ca/litter or calling 416-392-7899. Registration allows City staff to arrange special same-day litter pick-up. Individuals can place their bagged litter with their regular household garbage, although the six-bag limit still applies. The City encourages participants to sort recyclables into their proper containers.

The City’s annual three-week operational spring clean-up, which begins April 14, continues to tackle litter clean-up daily in four different areas of the city. As of April 11, maps/clean-up schedules will be available online at http://www.toronto.ca/garbage/annual_clean-up.htm
