On Friday, November 23, 2007, at approximately 5 p.m., police responded to a pedestrian struck collision in the Pharmacy Avenue/Lawrence Avenue East area.

It is alleged that:

- the pedestrian was struck while crossing Lawrence Avenue East,
- a number of people stopped their vehicles to assist the victim,
- the driver then fled the scene on foot,
- numerous unsuccessful attempts were made to have the driver return to the scene.

On Sunday, November 25, 2007, the driver turned himself in to police at 41 Division.

Paramasivam Ponnampalam, 49, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Fail to remain at the scene of an accident,
2) Fail to remain at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm,
3) Criminal Negligence causing bodily harm.

He is scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East on Monday, November 26, 2007.

The victim, a 22-year-old man, was taken to hospital and is currently in a coma in a critical care unit.

Witnesses are asked to contact police. Investigators would particularly like to speak with an off-duty nurse who stopped and assisted the victim.
