Toronto - On Thursday, October 4, 2007 at 8 p.m. in the Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books, (Lillian H. Smith Branch, 239 College Street), Dr. Andrew Biswell will deliver the 1st Annual Sybille Pantazzi Memorial Lecture. The topic is Edward Gorey: His Antecedents and Affinities.

Sybille Pantazzi was a noted Canadian librarian and bibliophile and the series was created in her memory to celebrate beautiful children's books. It has been endowed by her cousin, Jane Dobell, a member of the Executive of the Friends of the Osborne and Lillian H. Smith Collections.

Edward Gorey (1925-2000) is famous for his illustratrations and sometimes wordless books, with their vaguely ominous air and Victorian and Edwardian settings. They have held a huge cult following and have added a note of off beat hilarity to many children's books.

Dr. Andrew Biswell is the Academic Director of Manchester Metropolitan University's Writing School. His acclaimed biography The Real Life of Anthony Burgess won the 2006 Portico Prize.

An exhibition entitled Gorey Tales will also be on display at the site of the lecture. Admission is free.

When: Thursday, October 4 at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books,
Lillian H. Smith Library, Community Room 239 College Street (at Huron) 416-393-7753
